The original idea of this project is reflection which I was inspired by looking up at the surface in the water.
Like the beauty that kaleidoscope produces one after another, I was able to visualize the harmony of nature and the cycle of life by making a piece of photographs symmetrical multiple times. Seeing this kaleidoscopic beauty and “mandala” that represents a sacred place and divinity having symbols of nature and divines in common, the project expresses a sense of awe of ocean.

How they are made

Each work is originally one complete underwater photo I had taken.
What I did was to flip a portion of an object in the photo horizontally or vertically and keep repeating the process until the image reaches to the one I imagine.

Technic

I make use of strobe lights to reproduce vivid colors since the ocean deep inside absorbs any vivid colors as you go deeper. Depending on the depth and the clarity of water, I use different techniques such as capturing sunlight and making various type of lights to show objects more three-dimensionally by emphasizing light and shadow.

The number of copies on the market for each work

The Paper [Fresco Giclee Type S ]
Fresco Giclee is printable paper covered with plaster using an inkjet printer.
On the paper, after pigment ink has penetrated into the surface of unhardened plaster, the plaster gradually reacts to carbon dioxide gas in the air and becomes hardened.
Hardened plaster is resistant to heat, light, and moisture, with excellent preserving quality. The reason why I selected this paper is also because of natural sense of depth, feeling of colors, and sensitivity of texture.

I got to be able to take interviews with ten experts from various fields all over the world.
They were from publishing industry, public gallery, museum, photographic events and online magazine.

What I learned

I learned a lot by getting feedback from them since it was my very first photo review. For example, some of the things I learned was how to communicate with media people depending on their fields and how to display my works to make the most out of the artistic quality. Conversing with them who sincerely gave advice from the interviewee’s standpoint made me realize things I hadn’t thought of before. Socializing with participants from all over the world also gave an inspiration to my ideas on my projects.

Achievements

My work “Kaleidoscope” took part in the international online magazines called “GUP Magazine” from the Netherlands and “EMAHO Magazine” from India as achievements of this opportunity. I was also able to build a relationship with two French curators and have been keeping in touch since then.
A Japanese photo magazine “SHUTTER magazine” also had one section introducing my work, and a collector purchased one of my works as well.
